A concerned citizen reached out to us regarding a donkey that was living in less than desirable conditions with hooves that had been neglected for years. This sweet little guy was abandoned by his original owners when they sold their property, then was left in a field all alone after his pasture mates passed away. After animal control made a wellness check, the owner surrendered Xander to H.O.P.E. in early April, 2023.
Xander is an acute example of why regular hoof trims are imperative for an equine's overall health. When overgrown, the horse or donkey's foot has to bear weight in an unnatural way that stresses muscles, tendons, and joints. Walking on his overgrown hooves was difficult and painful for Xander. He was placed on a pain regimen to combat the discomfort, and after we got some x-rays of his feet, our barefoot trimmer tackled the complicated job of bringing his hooves to a healthy length. It has taken several trims for his feet to gradually achieve a more a natural balance.
His x-rays showed signs of laminitis, but we are hopeful that the condition can be managed and that Xander can enjoy many years with a future adoptive family. A sincere thank you to our wonderful volunteers who have spoiled this little guy will affection and care. To our community of supporters, we can only offer equines like Xander the medical and nutritional attention they need because of each of you! And to the concerned citizen who reached out to us, Xander says thank you.
