Lady was surrendered by her owner along with her pasture mate, Seneca in 2020. With her floppy ear and sweet, spotted face, she became a quick favorite among our volunteers. Lady and Seneca have been together a very long time and are very bonded to each other. We think it is best for both of them if they find a new home together.
While at H.O.P.E. Lady was diagnosed with glaucoma in her right eye, which caused her significant discomfort and ultimately resulted in the removal of that eye. Appaloosas are prone to eye issues like uveitis and glaucoma, which can be subtle in early stages and can go ignored for years.
While it may look extreme, enucleation (removal of the eye) is a procedure often used to treat late-stage glaucoma in horses. This procedure can immensely improve a horse’s quality of life by removing the source of their pain, and they adjust to being blind on one side fairly easily. Because their eyes are set far apart, horses don’t experience depth perception the same way humans do and they have a large field of view just from one eye. One-eyed horses can even compete in most equestrian sports! Considering that she was already blind on that side, we expect Lady to get along very well.
If you would like to support Lady and horses like her, please consider donating to Honey's Fund, a fund devoted exclusively to horses with extraordinary medical needs.
