Stormy

6 yr old, 15.3hh Thoroughbred Bay Mare

Available as a Pasture Mate
Stormy is a gentle, affectionate girl with a lot of love to give. She came to H.O.P.E. in August, 2020 with a Henneke body condition score of 2. At some point she suffered a severe trauma to her right hind quarter. We are not certain when that occurred, but the injury has healed and is not causing her any pain. She had many wounds along both sides of her topline and several scars and scrapes elsewhere on her body.

Stormy also suffers from EPM, which is a disease that affects the central nervous system and can be extremely debilitating. It affects the way her brain communicates with her legs, and since her case was very severe, she had a lot of trouble finding her feet, keeping her balance, and walking in a straight line. Treated early enough, 60-70% of horses with EPM can recover from some or most of their symptoms. Stormy completed 4 treatments that have successfully helped her walk with ease and confidence. She can run and buck and move about the pasture without turning in constant circles. She still leans a bit and probably always will. Her treatments have helped her reach an equilibrium where she's comfortable, but she will never fully recover from the disease.

Outside of Stormy's EPM, she is healthy, happy, and delights in all of the attention she receives from our volunteers. She greets all visitors to her pasture, is easily caught, and stands quietly to be groomed. She is a great companion to her pasture mate Skye.

Her 2 EPM treatments have helped Stormy walk with more ease, but she still has a bit of a lean.
