5 yr old/13.2 hh Sorrel Quarter Horse Cross Gelding Training: Green
Small stature does not guarantee that a pony will be appropriate for children. Jackson was both very green and a stallion, and it became apparent that his owner had overestimated Jackson's training, as well as the amount of time and space they had for him. He was relinquished to H.O.P.E. Acres in March, 2017.
Curious and intelligent, Jackson has come far in his training since coming to the farm. He was gelded immediately after his arrival at H.O.P.E. Since the summer of 2017, he has been working with a trainer who provided the following comments:
"He stands tied quietly to be groomed. Accepts the saddle, [but] still nervous about it... Knows how to pick his rider up from the mounting block as we made a game of it and stands quietly to be mounted without walking off. He has a solid walk stop turn and knows whoa verbal, walk verbal, and clucking encouragement verbal.
"Last session we were building to the trot but had a few bucks; they were slow motion and at the walk when asked to trot, nothing that would throw a rider, [he is] just confused currently about moving fast with a rider. We will be working on trotting more in the next session. He has a smooth gait, lunges walk trot canter in round pen. Riding in open arena around pastured horses has also been done and he was quiet. He will make an excellent English pony prospect or western pleasure prospect. I think he would love to work cattle because of his playful personality. He is playful and willing and likes to work."
Active and inquisitive, Jackson needs a patient owner who will give him an interesting job to do. He has several toys, and visitors to the farm will often find him chasing one of his balls across the pasture.
