9 yr old/15 hh Arabian Cross Palomino Mare Pasture Mate/Companion Horse
Honey came to H.O.P.E. Acres in February, 2017. She was emaciated from an infection that had set into a barbed wire wound in her hind leg. The wound would require several surgeries to treat, removing proud flesh and a bone spur that had developed due to the inflammation and trauma to her leg (see x-ray image below). During the latter procedure, the surgeon discovered a mass of rubber bands buried deep in her flesh. Presumably, Honey's original owner had used the rubber bands while bandaging her wound, but failed to remove them, resulting in the flesh of Honey's leg growing over them. Once the rubber bands were removed, she was finally able to conquer her infection and, after months of care, has blossomed into a beautiful and happy mare well on her way to recovery. Honey's patience and easy-going personality made caring for her a joy. The wound is nearly healed, and she is learning to reuse the muscles in her leg.
Thank you to everyone who generously contributed to funding her surgical procedures!
