20 yr old/15.3 hh Red Dun Quarter Horse Mare In Rehabilitation
Dixie arrived at H.O.P.E. in October. She has a blown abscess which is very painful and makes it hard for her to walk. She also has Cushing's Disease, which is a disfunction of the pituitary gland that is most common in senior horses. Among other complications, Cushing's can cause long, curly hair that does not shed properly, laminitis, and an increased tendency toward infection. Cushing's can be managed with diet and medication. While essential for all horses, proper preventative care, such as regular deworming, dental care, and farrier work, is imperative for a horse with Cushing's.
Right now we are managing her pain and inflammation with the expert guidance of our fantastic vet, and doing our best to get this sweet girl to a happy and healthy place.
